When ranking the amount of time it took for each sword to get polished and ready before each show, it’d be easy to assume—and in fact, most would forgive the assumption—that Kashuu Kiyomitsu and Hachisuka Kotetsu would take the most time of all because of their shared tendency to preen. Both of them prized their appearance in different ways for different reasons... but the truest fact was that neither of them could hold a candle to the degree to which Horikawa Kunihiro prized Izuminokami Kanesada looking his very best.

“Kiyomitsu.” Suddenly, Horikawa’s hand is slipping against his, over the fist he’s had since it was pointed out that he wasn’t stargazing. His eyes are bright, brighter than the purple and pink hues of sunrise. “Will you be all right?”

The obvious answer is no.

It had started out simply enough.
“Yasusada, you need spare dance lessons. A lot of them.”
“What? I’m keeping up just fine!”
“You look strained the minute you start dancing… no, it’s not your dancing that’s the problem.
Your problem’s bigger.”
“Oh, come on!”
“Hey, I’m the expert, so listen to me. The issue is you don’t have the idol spirit. It’s obvious that
you want to be hacking the Time Retrograde Army apart, not dancing and singing—”
“That’s not normal?”
“Not the point! We need to develop your idol spirit before the performance.”

“The windmill is working hard today, too,” he says, tone light and words measured. Kashuu has thought it before, and thinks it again now: Ishikirimaru has a voice well-suited to him.

When the baby gurgles and bats at his fingers with chubby hands, Tonbokiri’s face lights up with wonder. It’s so bright that Sengo thinks it must have left an afterimage on the back of his eyelids.
